Traditional Stained Glass Course

An exciting and colourful course that will give you a real taste of the craft and artistry behind making stained glass windows and mirrors.  This is a BEGINNERS course in the traditional skills of making a window using lead came, glass and solder.  However I also welcome improvers who might appreciate the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop their technique and creative ideas within a small group.  It will be an intensive class and may run over a little depending on progress, but I can guarantee you will have a great experience as well as lots of fun.  My new studio is a wonderful space, relaxing and supporting with plenty of room for lots of creativity.

This class uses the centuries old method which has hardly changed since the 12th Century.  A panel or window consists of pieces of coloured glass held together with strips of lead came which is then soldered at the joints and finally cemented to create a weatherproof piece.

Basic skills you will learn in this course:

  • You will be making a stained glass panel/mirror which can be decorated if time permits with your own, bespoke decoration
  • How to work with a pattern
  • choosing and cutting glass with confidence
  • Using traditional lead to assemble the pieces
  • Safety while using tools and materials
  • soldering
  • Finishing and polishing your work

It is helpful if you have already worked with glass before but not essential you will have plenty of opportunity to practice.  There is a limit of 4 students per class which will ensure you will receive a high level of individual tuition.

The cost includes all materials, glass, lead, solder and tools for your day.  You will need to bring lots of enthusiasm, an apron and please wear study shoes, no open toes as well as old clothes.   All refreshments are provided as well as a light vegetarian lunch.  Please bring a plate of food to share or you can always order lunch for an additional €5 per person.

This course involves working with lead so for safety reasons we recommend that pregnant women do not attend.

The course costs €100 and includes all materials, use of tools and safety equipment, course tuition notes, refreshments and lunch.

The deposit for this course is €50 and is payable at the time of booking

Maximum 4 participants per course
